Yeah I kinda see this one differently. Getting a retainer because a meeting went sideways sounds more like you got lucky than actually earned it. Clients usually hand out retainers when they trust you, not when you're digging yourself out of a hole. Maybe it worked out this time but banking on recoveries like that isn't a great long term plan. Good for you though, seriously, just don't count on the same trick twice.
