Was super skeptical about those bore scopes for cylinder inspection

My buddy at a shop in Nashville kept raving about his $200 bore scope and I figured it was just another gadget to waste money on. Then I pulled a head on a Cummins ISX last month and spotted a crack in the liner wall that I would have missed completely without being able to zoom in and twist the camera around. Anyone else find that these things actually save more time than they cost?

My $80 Amazon special let me down hard last spring on a Volvo D13. That thing showed me what I thought was a clean cylinder wall, but after I pulled the liner anyway the crack was right there in plain sight. The lighting on those cheap cameras is garbage and the focus goes soft past an inch. @blake_cooper's mechanic buddy in Ohio probably got lucky or was looking at a different brand. I'd rather trust a good borescope from a rental place that costs me $40 for the day than sink money into something I might use twice a year.

Man, I heard a diesel tech in Ohio say the same thing about catching liner cracks nobody else saw.
