My grandpa's 'tight is tight' advice almost cost me a job

So my grandpa has been building cabinets since the 70s, and he always told me 'tight is tight, too tight is broke.' Last month I was installing a custom maple cabinet in a kitchen in Austin, and I was cranking down the screws on the soft-close hinges way harder than I needed to. I figured if a little torque was good, more was better right? Well I stripped the screw hole on the door panel and had to drill it out and plug it with a dowel. Took me an extra hour to fix my own mess. He was right. I should have listened. Any of y'all ever ruin a piece by over-tightening something simple?

Bought a fancy moisture meter and it told me a dry stick was soaking wet

Picked up one of those pin type meters from a garden center in Salem last weekend to check my lemon tree, and it's reading 90% on a branch I snapped off three weeks ago. How does anyone trust these things with expensive plants?

I was skeptical about ultrasonic cleaning for old lenses... now I'm a believer

For years I swore off ultrasonic cleaners for vintage glass. Thought they'd shake something loose or mess up the coatings. But last month I had a Super Takumar 50mm that was absolutely caked in haze and stubborn fungus. After trying everything else I finally caved and ran it through a $80 ultrasonic tank from Amazon. 3 cycles at 40 degrees for 5 minutes each and that lens came out looking like new. No damage, no haze, no fungus residue. I still won't use it on lenses with radioactive elements or super thin coatings, but for the tough stuff it's legit. Anyone else had a change of heart on a tool they used to avoid?

Just realized a stump grinder isn't always the fastest option

I spent 6 hours grinding out a massive silver maple stump in a tight backyard last Thursday. Everyone kept telling me to just rent a bigger machine and plow through it. But the roots had wrapped around an old irrigation line and I had to stop every 20 minutes to dig around by hand. Ended up using a chainsaw and mattock for the tricky parts and it went faster than the grinder ever could. Has anyone else found certain stumps just aren't worth grinding?

Found a hack for peeling a dozen hardboiled eggs in under 30 seconds

I was making deviled eggs for a family cookout last Sunday and got tired of picking shell bits off 18 eggs. Saw a video where a guy added baking soda to the water and shocked them in ice water right after boiling. Tried it with a full dozen and they practically slid off in one piece after I rolled them on the counter. No more tiny shell fragments stuck to the white, no more cursing at my kitchen counter. Does anyone else have a weird kitchen trick that actually works better than the standard method?

A senior dev told me my code comments were useless until I learned to explain the 'why' not the 'what'

I used to write comments like 'this loops through the data' and he said no kidding I can read the code, tell me why we're looping through the data in the first place, and now I actually write useful notes that save me hours when I come back to a project months later on the road - has anyone else gotten that kind of feedback that totally shifted their workflow?

Heard a guy at the coffee shop say he saved $400 by swapping his car insurance every 6 months

I literally just switched my policy this morning (went with a local broker instead of the big name) and my new rate dropped by $85 a month, how often do you guys shop around for stuff like home or auto insurance?

Plywood vs. MDF for a garage workbench I built last week

I had to pick between 3/4-inch plywood and MDF for a new workbench. Went with plywood at $45 a sheet from Home Depot because I figured it'd hold up better against moisture. Sanded it down and oiled it with Danish oil, thing is solid as a rock. Anyone else have strong feelings about workbench tops?

Threw $80 at a generative AI writing tool last month

I figured it would help me bust through writer's block for a fantasy novel I'm working on. Within two hours I realized it was just churning out the same basic plot points I've seen a hundred times before. No character depth, no real emotion, just generic descriptions that felt hollow. Took me 3 hours to set up a Catan tournament bracket

I run a small monthly game night at my local library and last week I tried to organize a 16 player Catan tournament. I figured I could just wing it with a whiteboard and some markers. Three hours later I was drawing and erasing brackets trying to make sure nobody played the same person twice. Next time I'm just using a free online bracket tool from the start. Has anyone else wasted a whole evening on tournament logistics for a simple game night?
