My buddy said my chili was just spicy bean soup and it stung

I made my usual big pot of chili for our game night last weekend, the same recipe I've used for years. My friend Mark took one bite, looked at me, and said 'Derek, this is just spicy bean soup, where's the depth?' He said it needed something to cut the heat and add a different flavor, maybe a bit of cocoa or some coffee. I was kind of annoyed at first, but I tried adding a tablespoon of cocoa powder and a splash of cold brew to the leftovers. It was a total game changer, made it taste richer and less one-note. Now I feel like I have to re-learn how to make my own signature dish. Has anyone else had a simple piece of cooking advice completely flip a recipe you thought you had down?

A tiny bit of vinegar can work wonders too.

Wait, isn't vinegar supposed to be bad for some surfaces? I read something about how the acid can mess up stone countertops or certain seals over time. Hugo_hayes is right that a tiny bit works wonders for a lot of things, like cleaning windows. But I heard you have to be careful what you mix it with, too. Like never mix vinegar with bleach because that makes a dangerous gas. It's one of those things that's great but you gotta know the limits.
