Nobody on the bus ever acknowledges the driver - am I wrong for saying hi every time?

I get on the 7:15 AM route every day in Austin and I always say "good morning" to the driver. But I swear half the people just scan their card and stare at their phones like the driver's invisible. Doesn't that just make the whole ride worse for everyone? What side are you on - polite greeters or silent riders?

Friend tried that once and the driver just grunted.

Oh great, another morning chat with a total stranger who's trapped in their job. Richard_sanchez43's friend got the correct response, a grunt is basically the driver saying "I'm trying to get to work, not make friends." Silent riders are just respecting that the driver's probably not looking for a conversation at 7 AM, they want to drive the bus.
