Appreciation post: That time a longbox saved my collection from a basement flood

I had my floppies in a cardboard box on the floor of my buddy's basement for like 2 years. Basement took on water last spring and the bottom inch of that box got soaked. I lost maybe 20 issues, including a first print of some indie book I was stoked on. Now I keep everything in a plastic longbox I got for $15 on Craigslist, even if it looks uglier. Has anyone else lost books to water damage and swapped to plastic?

Bottom inch of that box got soaked" - bro that made me wince just reading it. Twenty issues gone including a first print? I'd be sick for weeks. I've had a couple books get a little water damage from a leaky roof but never a full on flood situation like that. A cardboard box on a basement floor is basically asking for it though, not gonna lie. I switched to the plastic bins a few years ago after seeing mold on a few back issues and I swear I'll never go back. Cheap insurance honestly, $15 is nothing compared to replacing a run of something you actually care about.

Plastic bins are one of those things where you pay $15 now or pay way more later lol.
