So I got into it with an old timer at a camera show last weekend...
He swore to me that digital sensors can't ever match film for dynamic range, but I've got a Nikon D850 that handles harsh afternoon sun better than any of the 35mm bodies I've worked on, so now I'm wondering if I've been wrong about film all these years or if he's just stuck in his ways?

Shook me the first time I heard that argument too. But I've got a friend who still shoots medium format film for landscapes, and when he scans a properly exposed Portra 400 negative, it holds highlight detail that would make my Sony sensor clip into pure white. It's not that film is better, it's that film handles overexposure in a different, more forgiving way than digital does.

I never thought about it like that, but it kinda makes sense cause film rolls off the highlights so smooth while digital just hits a wall. Still though, I've seen what a D850 can pull out of shadows in post, and that kinda flexibility is hard to beat for my style of shooting. I guess both systems have their own kinda magic, but I'm sticking with digital for now.
