TIL the cheapest way to eat in Tokyo is convenience store food, not street stalls

I was in Tokyo for 10 days last month and kept hearing everyone rave about the street food stalls. Honestly, those stalls cost like $8 to $12 for a tiny skewer of meat. But the FamilyMart or 7-Eleven onigiri and bento boxes were maybe $3 to $5 each and tasted just as good. Ngl, I saved at least $50 over the trip by grabbing breakfast and snacks there instead. Has anyone else found a hidden cheap food source in a big city?

Hold up, I gotta disagree hard on this one lol. I was in Tokyo last spring and those konbini meals got old real fast after day three. The onigiri rice gets all dry and crumbly, and the bento boxes are loaded with preservatives that leave you feeling bloated. Meanwhile, I found myself at the Nishiki Market stalls dropping like $6 on takoyaki that was made fresh in front of me, or a $4 skewer of grilled mochi with soy sauce that was way more satisfying. Maybe those seven dollar convenience store options save cash, but you're missing the actual taste and experience of real street food that makes Tokyo worth visiting.

That konbini versus street food thing is just another example of how we all trade a little real connection for convenience in our daily lives... @derek_brown28.
