TIL my old 'pack everything' strategy was a $200 mistake

I used to pack a full checked bag for any trip over three days, thinking I needed options. Last year, flying to Denver, the airline lost my suitcase for two days and I had to buy a whole new outfit and toiletries. That cost me about $200 out of pocket. Now I only travel with a carry-on, no matter how long the trip. I just do laundry at the hotel sink or find a local laundromat. Has anyone else had a packing disaster that forced a total change in strategy?

Denver lost your bag for two days? That's brutal luck for a city trip. I'd be so mad having to drop two hundred bucks right at the start. Your sink laundry plan is definitely the smarter move now.

Did you end up wearing anything ridiculous in the meantime, @emmashah? I had the same thing happen in Chicago last year and ended up in a $60 hoodie from a gift shop just to have something clean.
