Serious question, is it really worth flying into a cheaper airport an hour away

I had to pick between a $180 flight into Manchester or a $280 flight into Boston last month, and after factoring in the $50 rental car and 90 minutes of driving, I ended up spending $235 and 2 extra hours total, so has anyone else found a way to make the math work better on these secondary airports?

I read somewhere that Manchester's rental car fees are actually some of the highest in the UK, something about airport taxes and location surcharges. That $50 tag is just the starting point, then they hit you with insurance and fuel charges that push it way past $100.
