I tried the dollar store tortilla trick and my stove almost quit on me

Last Tuesday I was dead set on making quesadillas for $1.50 total, so I grabbed those 30-cent tortillas from the Dollar King on Elm Street. When I flipped them in my old skillet, one landed half on the burner and caught fire faster than I could yell "nope." Ended up eating cold cheese on burnt tortilla scraps while fanning the smoke detector. Has anyone else had a budget meal plan backfire this bad?

Heard a food blogger mention cheap tortillas have almost no gluten structure so they crisp up way too fast... @alex_taylor10 called it with the air pockets thing, that's probably what went wrong for you too. Might be worth tossing the Dollar King tortillas and spending the extra 50 cents on the good ones next time.

Oh man, that's rough! I actually just saw a YouTube video where someone tested those dollar store tortillas and they said the cheap ones have way more air pockets that can catch fire if they hit the burner directly. Maybe it's just me but I'd probably just microwave them next time or use a pan with higher sides to keep them contained. Cold cheese on burnt tortilla scraps sounds like a sad dinner though, I've definitely been there with my own budget meals going wrong. At least you got a funny story out of it, even if your stove might need a little break after that.
