My friend in Denver told me to water my new cactus only once a month, but after three weeks it started to shrivel.

Turns out the advice was for a mature plant, not the tiny one I bought, so I had to learn about different growth stages the hard way... has anyone else gotten advice that didn't fit their specific plant?

It's just a cactus, not a pet that needs a babysitter.

Oh man, I get that, but my prickly pear totally died when I went on a two week trip last summer. I forgot to move it out of a super hot window, and the poor thing just cooked. Now I have a neighbor come water my big cactus if I'm gone more than a week, just a quick splash. It sounds silly but it made a huge difference.

Yeah but have you actually kept a cactus alive long term? Some of those fancy ones need specific care. My old boss had a saguaro that got root rot from one overwatering. It's not just about neglect, it's about knowing what each plant actually needs. What kind of cactus do you have that's so low maintenance?
