Tried watching The Witcher season 3 without reading the books first

I picked up The Witcher books last month after hearing how good they were, but I got through only the first one before the new season dropped on Netflix. The show skipped around so much I had no clue what was happening with the timelines, and I ended up pausing every 10 minutes to Google characters. Does anyone have a system for keeping up with adaptations when you're only partway through the source material?

Nah, knowing the book backstory actually makes the show way better though.

Stop overthinking it and just watch the show on its own terms. The books and the show are completely different things, even if they share character names and some plot points. Netflix's version takes liberties with timelines, merges characters, and adds its own storylines. If you treat it as a separate universe, you will enjoy it much more. Trying to sync up your partial book knowledge with a TV adaptation is a recipe for frustration, every single time. I have seen plenty of shows based on books I have never read and had a great time, because I went in without any expectations. Just sit back and let the show tell its own story, and you will save yourself a lot of headaches.
