My niece asked me why the Harry Potter movies cut so much from the books

We were watching the first one last weekend and she's only 10. She said 'the book had so much more of the school, it feels smaller here.' I always defended the films, but hearing it from a kid who just read it hit different. Made me realize how much my own memory of the books has faded over 20 years. Anyone else have a moment where a fresh reader's view changed your take on an adaptation?

That's honestly such a good point from a kid. We get used to the movies being the main thing we see, and our memory of the books gets fuzzy over time. My little cousin had a similar thing with the first Hunger Games book, and it totally made me see the movie in a different light. It's wild how a new reader can cut right to the heart of what's missing.

Yeah, that "cut right to the heart of what's missing" part is so true. Kids just don't have all the movie noise in their heads yet. It's a fresh take we can't get back.
