My book club told me to skip the first book in a trilogy and start with the second one

Friend said the first book was slow and I'd lose interest. Started with book two and spent the whole meeting confused about who married who and why that forest fire mattered. Has anyone else had bad luck taking skipping advice from a group?

Maybe just skip to the forest fire part and call it good.

Actually a lot of forest fires are intentionally set through controlled burns in places like California and Australia to clear out dead brush. The problem is when those burns get out of hand because wind changes or dry conditions are worse than predicted. I read somewhere that around 60% of wildfires in certain regions are started by lightning strikes in remote areas anyway. So skipping to the fire part kind of misses the fact that most of them burn naturally without anyone even knowing for days.

That's basically what happened at a national forest near me last summer, lightning strike way back in the woods and it burned for almost two weeks before anyone even noticed.
