Heated debate at my library's club over 'The Goldfinch' ending

My local book club in Springfield argued for a full hour last night about whether Theo's final choice was hopeful or just sad. One member, Sarah, said it showed growth, but another guy, Mark, called it a total cop-out that ruined the book for him. It got me wondering how much a book's ending really shapes your whole take on it. Does anyone have a strong opinion on an ending that changed how you felt about the whole story?

An hour over one character's choice... seems like a lot of energy for fiction. Endings matter, sure, but a book is the whole ride, not just the last page. People get so worked up about finding a clear message when maybe it's just messy, like real life. It's a story, not a life lesson.

Yeah, but that one choice can change how you see the whole ride, right? If a character does something that feels fake for them, it can ruin the book for me. I just need it to make sense with who they are, even if it's a messy ending.
