My brother made me watch Schitt's Creek backwards and it broke my brain

So my little brother comes over last Friday night with a six pack and says we should binge Schitt's Creek. But he insists we start with season 6 and go backwards each episode. I laughed at him but he was dead serious. He said it would turn the show into a tragedy about a rich family losing their memories instead of a comedy about poor people getting better. And you know what, he was kind of right. Watching David go from confident businessman back to anxious mess was actually wild. By the time we got to the pilot everyone seemed like sad, broken versions of themselves. Has anyone else tried watching a show in reverse order like that? I feel like my whole brain got rewired.

Wait, did you actually watch every single episode backwards? Because that is INSANE and I kind of love it. My wife and I did something similar with Breaking Bad once, starting from the finale and going back. It completely changed how we saw Walt, made him seem like a victim of circumstance rather than a guy who chose to be bad. But Schitt's Creek backwards as a tragedy about memory loss? That's actually brilliant. Your brother is some kind of weird genius or a total maniac, maybe both. I bet the pilot must have felt incredibly sad after seeing where everyone ended up in season 6 first.

Did you catch that article in the Atlantic a few months back about how reverse watching changes the whole emotional arc of a show? It said something about how our brains are wired to expect certain patterns, and flipping them messes with our sense of cause and effect. I tried it with The Office once, just for a few episodes, and it was strange how Michael Scott seemed like a tragic figure instead of an annoying boss. Your brother might be onto something with that memory loss angle, it makes me wonder if the creators ever thought about it that way.
