Had a bag of onions turn into a slimy mess in my pantry last week

I was grabbing one for chili and the whole bottom layer was just mush, so now I keep them in a mesh bag hanging from a hook on the counter and they've been dry for 5 days, anyone else had luck with that?

Kept a bag of potatoes in the bottom of my pantry once and they turned into this weird sticky liquid with a smell that reminded me of old socks left in a gym bag. Had to clean the whole shelf with bleach after that. Now I store my spuds in a paper bag with some holes poked in it and keep them away from any onions because apparently they speed up each other rotting. Your mesh bag hanging idea sounds solid though, I might try that for my garlic too since I keep finding green sprouts in mine.

the whole bottom layer was just mush" - did you check for any moisture getting in through the bottom before you moved them?
