Tried fading with a 0.5 guard for the first time in a while, messed up the blend

I’ve been using the same 1.5 guard for most fades the last few months, figured I’d switch it up on a regular customer yesterday. Grabbed a 0.5 guard on my Wahl clippers and tried to blend from the bottom up, but the line was way harsher than I expected. Had to spend an extra 20 minutes using the corner of the clipper to soften it out so it didn’t look choppy. Learned that I need to practice more with smaller guards before using them on someone who’s in a rush. Any of you guys have a go-to guard size that you stick with even when trying new stuff?

Tried the same thing last month and ended up chasing that dark line for what felt like forever too.

The 0.5 guard is definitely a beast compared to a 1.5 since the gap is way smaller. Was the line you got mostly from the bottom edge or did it show up higher up near the blend point? Figuring out where your clipper grabs could save you that extra 20 minutes on the next round.

And there I was thinking a 0.5 guard was just a myth until it bit me right in the fade. Turned out the line was all the way up near the crown, so I spent a solid half hour playing detective with my clipper. Guess I should have just trusted the gap and saved myself the extra cup of coffee.
