Found out my sourdough starter was dead for 3 months before I realized it

I kept feeding it and waiting for it to double but nothing happened. Turns out my tap water has enough chlorine to kill the yeast. Now I let the water sit out for 24 hours before using it. Anyone else's water kill their starter?

OH MAN that is SO frustrating! I wonder if your dead starter actually CHANGED the microbiome in your kitchen air and that's why your new one might work differently.

Three batches in six months is a lot of failures, so what changed between the first two that worked and these last three that didn't? Did you switch anything about the flour or water you were using around that time?
