Just got back from the Enchantments in Washington and the permit system is a total mess. Is it fair or just broken?

The whole thing misses how it hurts local hikers most. People from out of state plan trips months ahead and grab permits online. Meanwhile, someone living an hour away can't decide to go on a good weather weekend. It turns a public place into something you need a vacation planner for. That's not what these trails were meant for.

Honestly, it can be. The small stuff adds up fast and you don't notice until it's a real problem. Just keep an eye on it.
