Honestly, my map got soaked and I had to find my way out of the North Cascades by memory alone.

Ngl, I was on the Copper Ridge loop and a sudden storm ripped my paper map to pieces, so I spent 6 hours following creek sounds downhill until I hit a trail I recognized, and has anyone else had to bail using just landmarks?

Tbh, I have to disagree with @nathan193 about marking a map, because a soaked map is just trash. Honestly, learning to read the land itself is a more reliable skill when things go wrong.

Did you ever think about marking your map with a crayon?

Sounds a bit dramatic for a hiking story.
