Debate: Should we gate white papers or not?

I spent 4 hours last week debating with my team about gating a new industry report. Half say it generates leads, the other half say it hurts reach. Which side has actually worked for you in B2B?

Wait, have you seen the Content Marketing Institute's study on this? They found that ungated content gets about 10 times more views but gated content converts way better for actual sales conversations. My old marketing director used to say it depends on where the buyer is in their journey. If it's something really educational like a beginner guide, keeping it open is smarter for building trust. But for data heavy industry reports that showcase your expertise, gating usually works because the people downloading them are already ready to talk to a vendor.

Man, that's a really solid breakdown from your old director. You mentioned the buyer journey piece - where do you personally draw the line between "too early" and "ready to talk"? I've seen some teams treat a simple checklist as a gated asset and then wonder why nobody fills out the form. Meanwhile, I've seen other folks give away a 50-page industry benchmark report for free and get a ton of leads anyway just from the trust it builds. Is it really just about the depth of the content, or does the topic itself matter more?
