Warning: that weird coolant leak might be coming from the heater control valve

I was working on a 2012 Ford Escape in the shop yesterday, and the owner said it was losing coolant but he couldn't see a puddle. I checked the usual spots, hoses, radiator, water pump, and everything was dry. I was about to give up when I saw a faint pink crust trail running down the firewall. It led right to the plastic heater control valve, which was cracked on the bottom side. You couldn't see the crack from above at all. I had to pull the air box to get a mirror on it. Replaced the valve and the hose clamps, cost the guy about $85 in parts. Has anyone else run into one of these hiding its leak like that? Seems like a common fail point on that model.

My 2010 Escape had that exact same crack last spring. Found it the same way, that pink crust trail on the firewall. Such a pain to spot.

Ever wonder why they use pink coolant anyway? @the_betty, that crusty trail is like a neon sign once you know to look for it. My old Ranger did the same thing right before the heater core went.
