Walked into my buddy's shop 3 months after he switched to full synthetic in his fleet and the sludge difference in those old Ford vans was wild
He pulled the valve covers off a 2012 E-250 with 180k miles that had been running conventional oil for 8 years, and after just 3 months of full synthetic you could see the clean metal peeking through where the dirty buildup used to be thick like peanut butter, anyone else see results that fast?

Did they change the oil more often or just switch brands?

Yeah I had basically the same thing happen with my old F-150. Switched to synthetic around 140k miles and by the next oil change the dipstick was way cleaner looking. Not as dramatic as seeing valve covers but still pretty crazy.

Read somewhere that synthetic oil has way more detergents packed into it compared to conventional. That's probably why it cleans things up so fast once you switch. The theory I saw was that it slowly dissolves the old gunk and carries it out with each oil change instead of leaving it all to cake up inside. Kinda makes you wonder how much crud is sitting in engines that have only ever run conventional for 200k miles. Did you notice any change in how the engine ran after you switched?
