Switched from a cheap code reader to a proper scan tool and it saved my butt
I mean, I used to grab the $30 generic OBD2 scanner for everything, but it just gave me the P0420 code on a customer's Camry. My new Launch scanner showed live data on the downstream O2 sensor, and it was flatlined. Took me right to a bad cat instead of chasing oxygen sensors for hours. Anyone else have a go-to tool that changed how you diagnose stuff?

That "proper scan tool" idea can be a real money trap for weekend guys.

Honestly though, that cheap reader gets the job done most of the time. A P0420 code on a Camry is almost always the cat anyway, so the fancy live data just confirmed what you already knew. Spending all that cash on a pro tool for one specific fix seems like overkill. For a lot of us, the basic code is enough to point you in the right direction without the huge price tag.
