Tried using a water-based primer on an old Chevy truck bed and it peeled off in sheets

Last week I sprayed a 1995 Chevy bed with PPG water-based primer because I wanted to cut down on VOC fumes in my shop near Tulsa. Within 48 hours it started lifting around the edges like cheap sticker. Turns out that old single-stage paint underneath had some wax or silicone still embedded. Learned the hard way I should have hit it with a wax remover first. Anybody else run into adhesion issues with water-based stuff on classic trucks?

Wait, water based primers really do that on old single stage paints? I used to think they were fine for any prep work, but after watching my buddy's 80s F150 turn into a peeling mess I totally switched back to solvent based for anything with original paint that's been sitting in the sun for 20 years.

wait, you telling me @jesse290 had to learn that the hard way too? yeah water based and baked on original paint dont mix, its like oil and water but less fun and more flakes everywhere.
