Rant: Everyone says to always replace the whole dryer drum assembly, but after a job in St. Louis where I just swapped the worn rear bearing for $15, I saved the customer over $300.

Has anyone else found a specific part you can often fix instead of doing the full, expensive replacement?

That's a solid point about the dryer bearing. I've seen the same thing with washing machine drain pumps. The impeller cracks but the motor is fine, so you can just get the plastic piece for a few bucks instead of the whole unit. What other small fixes have you found that the big companies always say to replace entirely?

Oh man, @hollym82, you're totally right about those pumps. I've saved so many dishwashers just by cleaning out the little filter basket at the bottom that gets clogged. They'll tell you the whole motor is shot. Same with fridge icemakers, the plastic gear that drives the auger strips out. You can find the gear kit online for like twelve bucks instead of buying a whole new unit for hundreds.
