Honeywell panel fried after a power surge last Tuesday

I had a Vista 20P go totally dead on me last week at a job near Austin. Lightning hit something close by and it took out the panel, keypad, and two door sensors. Ended up having to replace the whole setup and run new wire for the sensors. Has anyone else had luck with surge protectors on their installs or am I just asking for more trouble?

Oh man, I probably shouldn't admit how many times I've fried gear the same way.

Three times last year I burned through a set of speakers because I kept plugging them into a mismatched amp (blaming the late-night tinkering). Honestly, there's something kinda satisfying about that little pop and smoke cloud before you realize the mistake - it's like a rite of passage. Better to learn the limits by breaking stuff early than to never push your gear at all.
