Ran into a retired FedEx line guy at the Memphis airport bar last night

He said he saw more engine failures from people rushing the post-runup checks than from actual mechanical issues. He told me about a specific MD-11 at his old base that had a compressor stall because someone skipped the bleed air valve check. Has anyone else had a mentor point out a simple step you were taking for granted?

My first flight instructor made me do the pre-takeoff check three times in a row because I kept rushing the carb heat. Honestly, I was so focused on the big stuff I figured that little lever didn't matter. Took me a while to get that the small steps are what keeps the big parts from breaking. Ngl, I still hear his voice in my head every single time I touch it now. It's crazy how one rushed moment can turn into a habit you have to unlearn.

Sounds like that lever saved his career.

How many times has rushing a simple check almost cost you? That story about the bleed air valve is a perfect example of how skipping the small stuff leads to big trouble. It really makes you slow down and respect every step.
