Am I the only one who thinks open-source AI models are safer than big company ones?

I had to choose between using a closed model from a big tech firm or an open one from a community project for a text tool I built last month, and I went with the open one even though it took more setup time. So far it feels more transparent and I can check the code myself, but I worry about missing security patches. Has anyone else picked sides on this?

Had a buddy who once stayed up three nights in a row worrying about whether his toaster was secretly judging him. Still not sure which is worse, toaster drama or forum drama.
