Just learned the first transatlantic cable had enough wire to wrap around the earth three times

I was reading an old book about engineering history at the library, trying to kill time between jobs. It said the first working telegraph cable laid across the Atlantic Ocean in 1866 used over 340,000 miles of iron and copper wire. That number just sat in my head. I was up in an attic yesterday, fighting with maybe 50 feet of RG6, and I tried to picture that much cable. The book said they made it on a ship called the Great Eastern, and it took them four tries over eight years to get a line that held. It makes my bad days with a tangled drop line seem pretty small. Has anyone else run into a fact about our trade that just stopped you for a minute?

I finally understood why my book club hated the ending of 'The Goldfinch' after a chat at the library

I was at the downtown branch last Tuesday, and a woman saw me re-reading the last 50 pages. She said, 'Struggling with the car crash epilogue too? It feels like a different book.' We talked for 20 minutes, and she pointed out how the main character's sudden change didn't match the 700 pages of grief we'd read. It made me see the debate wasn't just about liking the ending, but if the whole character journey made sense. Has anyone else had a book's ending totally re-framed by one comment?

Warning: I blew $45 on a fancy 'gourmet' hot dog with fig jam and goat cheese

I saw this place in Portland last month that was all over social media for their wild hot dog combos. I got the one with fig jam, goat cheese, and arugula on a brioche bun. It sounded interesting, but it was a total mess. The sweet jam just fought with the tangy cheese, and the whole thing fell apart in my hands after two bites. The hot dog itself got totally lost. I stood there on the street, sticky and disappointed, $45 lighter for two of them for me and my partner. It felt like they were trying so hard to be different they forgot what makes a hot dog good. Has anyone else tried one of those over-the-top fancy hot dogs and actually liked it?

I was totally wrong about scheduling inspections for a strip mall job

My foreman pointed out that booking the framing and electrical checks on the same day was a huge bottleneck, because the electrical guy couldn't start until framing was signed off. We lost a full day waiting. Anyone else have a better way to line these up?

Showerthought: I used to think pocket holes were the only way to build face frames.

For the first five years in my shop, I used pocket holes on every single face frame, no questions asked. It was fast, easy, and I thought it was strong enough. Then I had a client in Oak Park complain about a slight twist in a big pantry unit after a humid summer, and I knew the joinery was the weak link. That was the push I needed. Now, I only use mortise and tenon for anything over four feet. I bought a Domino joiner two years ago, and it changed the game. The frames are rock solid, they stay flat, and the extra hour of work per cabinet is worth it for the peace of mind. Has anyone else made a hard switch like that, or do you still swear by pocket screws for frames?
