My recent experiment with paper soaking left me questioning conventional wisdom

Some artists recommend soaking paper for even washes, while others caution against it due to potential loss of detail. In my experience, a soaked sheet gave me lovely soft clouds but made the tree lines fuzzy and hard to define. On the other hand, dry paper let me paint crisp edges, but the color transitions looked harsh and unnatural. I'm torn between achieving fluid blends and maintaining precision. Your mileage may vary, but I'd love to hear how others balance this. Take this with a grain of salt, as I'm still learning, but what's your take on pre-wetting for controlled applications?

Ugh, people treat watercolor like it's defusing a bomb sometimes. It's just paper, try it wet for some things and dry for others (or hey, slightly damp as a compromise). Not every painting needs to be a perfect manifesto.

Wow, you're so right! My cousin used to only paint on super expensive paper, even for practice. One day we just used newspaper and had a blast, and her work actually improved.

For tree lines, do you switch to drier paper mid-painting?
