I finally showed my sketchbook to the other drivers at a rest stop, and one guy thought my monster trucks were real blueprints.

Rest stop crowds aren't exactly art critics. I mean, if your sketches are detailed enough, it's easy to see why someone might think they're plans. Idk, maybe it's just me but that's actually a compliment to your drafting skills.

Ever consider how people's jobs warp what they see? Like, if you're an engineer or a contractor, your brain's wired to spot blueprints and measurements everywhere. Someone with that background looks at detailed sketches and their mind goes straight to practical application, not artistic expression. It says more about the observer's lens than the actual content on the page. They're literally incapable of seeing it as just art.

Imagine training your brain to see infrastructure in every sketch, to the point where a doodle of a tree might as well be a schematic for urban planning. It's almost tragic how a perfectly good piece of art gets reduced to a set of measurements and tolerances. You have to wonder if these folks ever switch off the professional software running in their heads, even for a minute. Then again, maybe they're just disappointed that the drawings won't actually hold up a building. It's a special kind of blindness, where the beauty of line and form gets lost in the demand for function. Honestly, it makes me grateful for the moments when I can still see a sketch as just a sketch.
