Reading a book about lunar bases got me sorting my trash better
I just finished this sci-fi novel where the moon colony had to recycle everything to survive (even air and water, can you imagine). It made me look at my own garbage can full of mixed plastics and paper. So I dug out the old recycling bins from the garage (they were pretty dusty). Now I'm actually separating things, and it feels good, like I'm helping a little. Who knew a story about space could make Earth habits seem so important?

You said it feels good "like I'm helping a little" but honestly that's just a story making you feel better. Most of that sorted recycling just ends up in a landfill anyway because the systems are broken. It takes WAY more than sorting your trash to fix real problems like industrial waste.

Last year, our local recycling center added a second shift because of community sorting efforts. That meant 30 new jobs in a town where work is hard to find. Sure, some plastic still gets trashed, but now more people are paying attention to waste streams. That attention turns into votes for better laws on industrial dumping. If everyone just gave up because the system is broken, we'd lose that push for change. Your point about big pollution is right, but ignoring small steps kills the momentum we need to fix it.

Wait, 30 new jobs just from sorting? That's crazy good news. How did people even get that organized?
