Calling model trains "potential assets" is optimistic, gotta say. @sarahwhite isn't wrong about the value drop, so maybe just buy what you love and keep the emergency fund for actual emergencies, like if your train derails and takes out a vase.

Set a fixed monthly hobby budget so you never touch your emergency fund, that's how I keep my vintage locomotive hobby from wrecking my finances.
