I used to laugh at using a marver for every gather, but a lopsided bowl proved me wrong.

One misshapen piece was all it took to make me start marvering religiously.

Man, you're telling me. I made this ashtray that was so off-center it looked like a sad pancake. My buddy still calls it "the abstract piece" to mock me. Now I marver like my life depends on it. That stupid thing sits on my bench as a permanent reminder.

Yeah, I was totally in that same boat! I always thought it was a waste of time for simple shapes. Then I made a vase that was so crooked it was laughable. That one piece taught me more than a hundred perfect ones ever could. Now it's just part of the routine, no matter what I'm making. That extra few seconds saves me so much headache and lost work later on.

My buddy Steve swore he didn't need to marver his stems. Ended up with a set of wine glasses that all leaned like the Tower of Pisa. He doesn't skip that step anymore, let me tell you.
