My aunt's 'fancy' party ruined a perfectly good burger for me

She insisted on serving them with fig jam and blue cheese at her 4th of July BBQ in Phoenix. I tried to be polite but it was so gross, I had to sneak mine to the dog. Anyone else had a 'gourmet' combo that just completely missed the mark?

Okay but blue cheese and fig jam is a classic combo though. Your aunt might be onto something, even if it's not for a backyard burger. Maybe it was just too much for a hot day.

Ugh this is so true. It's like when people try to serve a heavy stew in the middle of summer. Some flavors just don't fit the mood or the weather. I see it with clothes too, like wearing a fancy wool sweater to a casual outdoor picnic. The idea might be good on its own, but the setting makes it feel all wrong.
