The Sopranos fade to black still bugs me 10 years later

I watched the whole series again last month and that cut to black in the diner hits different now knowing David Chase planned it that way from the start. It made me feel cheated the first time but now I think it's actually genius because it forces you to decide what happens next yourself. Do you think Tony died in that moment or did he just keep living his paranoid life?

Honestly, the way people are always looking for some big, clear ending in everything from TV shows to real life situations is probably why this bugs us so much. We're so used to having things wrapped up with a neat little bow, and he just said "nah, figure it out yourself." It's kinda like when you're waiting for a friend to text you back about a serious talk and they just leave you hanging, your brain runs through every possible outcome anyway so maybe the cut to black is just life saying "the rest is up to you.
