My sauerkraut volcano erupted all over the kitchen ceiling
I was making a big batch of red cabbage kraut in a glass jar three days ago. I forgot to burp it before bed, and the pressure built up overnight. I woke up to a loud pop and found a purple geyser had hit the ceiling above the counter. I spent the morning cleaning pink brine off everything. Has anyone found a good way to stop a jar from blowing its top?

Wait, the ceiling? I didn't even know it could shoot that high... mine just made a mess on the counter. You must have had it sealed up crazy tight for that kind of pressure. I use those plastic lids with the little airlock bubblers now, they let the gas out without letting anything in. Before that, I just left the jar ring loose so it could burp itself. A purple kitchen sounds like a nightmare to clean up.

Oh man, I learned the hard way too. I just use a clean cloth over the top now, held with a rubber band. Lets it breathe and stops the geyser.
