I chose a bold print over a classic solid for a client's dress and it actually worked

Everyone said the floral pattern was too loud for a formal event in Chicago, but she loved it and got tons of compliments. Has anyone else gone against the 'safe' advice and been happy with the result?

My aunt's wedding in Milwaukee last year had a "no black" dress code. I wore a navy suit with bright orange pinstripes because it was the only nice thing I had clean. I was sure I'd stick out, but three people asked where I got it. I used to think you had to blend in at formal stuff, but that suit changed my mind.

Remember my cousin's graduation party where everyone said to avoid stripes because they'd look weird in photos. I wore this old blue and white striped shirt anyway, and now it's my favorite picture from that whole day. Sometimes the thing that feels wrong ends up being the only thing that feels right, you know? I mean, maybe the rules are just there so we have something to break.
