Took me 45 minutes to rasp a lumpy hoof that should have been 15 because I forgot to dress my file first.

After the third pass I finally realized my brand new rasp was clogged with old horse hair and I wasted half the appointment fighting it - has anyone else had this happen with a fresh tool?

Did you ever think it was just a waste of time dressing a brand new rasp? I used to skip it until I had the exact same issue with a fresh one caked in debris from the factory. That one clogged session was enough to make me change my mind, now I dress every file before it touches a hoof.

Buddy of mine swore up and down that new files were good to go out of the box. He spent a whole afternoon fighting a clogged rasp on a client's draft horse, and the owner had to bring the horse back the next day to get it finished.
