Am I the only one who thinks magnetic hoof stands are overpriced junk?

I spent $180 on a fancy magnetic stand from a big catalog, thinking it would save my back on a 5-horse job in Austin last Tuesday. The magnet lost grip halfway through trimming a front foot and the hoof stand tipped over, spooking the mare and making me start over. Has anyone else had better luck with the cheap plastic wedge blocks instead, or did I just get a dud?

Stick with the cheap wedge blocks for now, but hear me out. I trim my own horses and a buddy's miniatures, and I learned the hard way that magnetic stands are built for smooth, level concrete floors in nice barns. If you're on dirt or gravel, or even a slightly wet surface, that magnet can't get a good hold. The wedge blocks are ugly and basic, but they don't depend on a perfect surface to work. Your issue wasn't the magnet itself, it was the ground letting the stand shift. Save your money and buy a couple of those rough rubber stall mats to set the wedge on if you need extra grip.

Nailed it. Wet gravel made mine slide too.
