Hit my 100th day of bringing my own bags to the grocery store and it totally surprised me

I kept a little tally on my phone fridge calendar and yesterday I hit exactly 100 days in a row of remembering my reusable bags. I never thought that number would mean anything to me but seeing it made me realize how many plastic bags I used to go through without even thinking. What convinced me to change was that video of a turtle with a straw stuck in its nose... I know it's cliché but that image just got stuck in my head. Now every time I grab my bags from the car I feel like I'm actually doing something small that adds up. Has anyone else tracked a habit like this and gotten surprised by the total?

Did you read that piece in the Times about how those thin plastic bags can't actually be recycled through most curbside programs? I thought I was doing okay but then learned they just end up in the landfill anyway.

Yeah that Times piece was a real bummer @finleyl55. I used to be all proud of myself shoving those nasty thin produce bags into the store's recycling bin thinking I was saving the planet. Turns out they just gum up the machines at the plant and most get tossed out anyway. So now I basically have a cabinet full of them under the sink for "future use" that never comes. It's like a secret landfill in my own kitchen.
