Unpopular opinion: lash lifts are way overhyped for most clients

Had a client last week at my booth in Austin, Sarah, who came in insisting on a lash lift because her friend got one. I told her straight up her lashes were too short and brittle for it to look good, but she pushed for it anyway. After the service she looked in the mirror and admitted I was right, it barely showed. Why do people think this treatment is a magic fix when most of them need a decent lamination or just better mascara? Anyone else deal with clients who fight you on what actually works for their lash type?

I mean you said she "pushed for it anyway" after you told her it wouldn't work, and I have to ask - why do you think clients like Sarah are so dead set on a specific service even when you lay out the facts for them? Is it the friend pressure thing, or do they just not trust that you know what you're talking about? Like is there a way to get through to that type of client before they waste their money and your time?

Oh man, I've been there more times than I can count. The thing is, they usually come in already convinced because a friend or some Instagram guru told them it's the magic bullet, so anything I say sounds like I'm just trying to upsell them or protect my ego. I've found the only way to get through is to stop saying "that won't work" and instead ask them really specific questions about what they think will happen, like "okay, if we do that, what do you see being different in a month?" (it forces them to think it through themselves). Then I'll follow up with "here's what I've seen happen with that approach in the past, and here's why it usually goes sideways" - not arguing, just laying out the evidence. Even then, some people just have to learn the hard way (especially the ones whose friends are really pushing it), and I've learned to just let them waste their money and come back humbled later. It's frustrating, but I've stopped trying to save everyone from themselves and focus on the ones who actually listen.
