Debate: Is hot air rework worth it over soldering for small jobs?

I fixed a busted headphone jack on some earbuds last week and tried using my hot air station instead of just a soldering iron. It was way faster for removing the old jack but I melted a nearby plastic housing a bit. For tiny components like that, I'm starting to think hot air is overkill compared to a good iron and flux. What do you guys use for small stuff and have you had similar issues with collateral damage?

Right, because nothing says "precision work" like pointing a tiny space heater at fragile plastic parts. Props for the speed, but collateral damage kinda defeats the purpose of a quick fix. You planning on keeping the heat gun for bigger jobs or retiring it to the drawer of shame?

Nah, I'm with @rosep87 on this one... hot air for a headphone jack is like using a flamethrower to light a candle. Did you try using kapton tape or something to shield the plastic, or was it just too tight in there? I've wrecked a few switches myself by forgetting how fast that heat travels through the board. For little stuff I still lean on my iron with a tiny chisel tip, feels way more controllable. What's your go-to tip shape for when you do use the iron?
