Am I the only one who thinks those new 'repair cafes' are a bad idea?
I checked out the one in Springfield last month, and it felt more like a free clinic than a real shop. They had a volunteer trying to fix a 2019 MacBook Pro with a basic $20 soldering iron kit. How do you even start that conversation about proper tools and safety?

Trying to fix modern tech with a basic soldering iron is like trying to perform surgery with a butter knife. I once watched a guy at one of those places attempt a repair that ended with more smoke than a campfire.

Disagree completely, a good iron and some flux can fix plenty of modern boards. That smoke story sounds more like a skill issue than a tool problem. You just need the right technique for small parts.

Bring your own gear if you're serious about board repair. A decent hot air station is pretty much required for modern laptops.
