The debate about pre-filling corner beads before hanging

I spent 45 minutes fighting paper tape on a outside corner that kept bubbling up, then my coworker said he always pre-fills beads with mud first to avoid that. Has anyone else found the extra step worth the time savings on the back end?

The "dried mud off my trowel" part is a good reminder that timing is everything here. Actually, the trick isn't just pre-filling the bead itself, it's about pre-filling the corner behind the bead before you even put the bead on. You want to push mud into the corner with a 6-inch knife, let it set up a bit, then set your bead into that fresh mud. That way the bead is bonded to the drywall and the mud, not just floating on top. If you just pre-fill the bead after it's up, you're still fighting the same air pocket issue underneath. The bubbling comes from trapped air, so getting that base layer right is what saves you the headache later.

That "kept bubbling up" part hits home. I tried pre-filling once on a whim and ended up with less sanding, but then I got distracted and had to scrape dried mud off my trowel.
