Old timer told me to skip the wide knife on butt joints, I learned my lesson in Lynn
A veteran finisher at the Lynn supply yard swore my 12 inch knife was causing ridges on every butt joint I did. He said go back to a 10 inch, feather the edges harder, and trust the mud to do the work. I fought him for six months, kept my 12 inch, and ended up sanding twice as much on a 40 unit apartment job. Now I'm wondering if I should switch for good or if his method only works on certain board thicknesses, anyone else had this same debate?

Same argument with my 8 inch until I tried his way. He was right.
