My first big ceiling job taught me the hard way about wet mud

Was finishing a 1,200 square foot ceiling in a house off Maple Street in Denver. Spent 3 hours taping and didn't realize the compound was too thick, so by the time I got to the other end, the first coat was already cracking. Had to scrape it all off and start over with a thinner mix. Anybody else had this bite them on a big flat ceiling?

Did you catch the cracking happening as you went or only after you walked away from it? Because I've had that moment where you think it's fine until the lights hit it just right and then you're staring at a disaster. What consistency do you usually shoot for on the big flat ones to keep that from happening again?

You think it's fine until the lights hit it just right" - yep, been there. But I actually disagree on the consistency thing. I go a little stiffer than most people say to, almost crumbly. The cracking is usually from drying too fast for me, not the mix being off.
